Compare Houston energy rates

Houston is the largest city in Texas, with a population of more than 2.2 million people. The bustling city also is one of many within the state that has a deregulated energy market. That means residents have the power to choose their electricity provider.

Deregulation also allows residents to search a robust list of different energy providers when they’re searching for cheap electricity rates in Houston.

Houston electric companies

Deregulation opens up the market for a large group of competing companies. Popular energy companies serving Houston include TXU Energy, Gexa Energy, Direct Energy, Frontier Utilities, Reliant Energy, and 4Change Energy. Most energy companies offer a mix of plans, making it easier to find one that works for you and your budget.

It is important to note that you cannot choose your utility company. In other words, you can choose the source of your electricity, but you can’t choose the company delivering it to your home or business. Getting the electricity to the consumer is the job of a utility company, and for Houston, the utility is CenterPoint Energy.

If you are experiencing a power outage, you should contact CenterPoint Energy here or call 1-800-332-7143 to report an outage. Report or check the status of a power outage here or at 1-877-451-9818

Types of Houston electric plans

Providers offer a variety of plans. Some might be more convenient for your income level or for the type of electricity you purchase. Below are some plan types:

  • Fixed rate: Electricity rates stay the same throughout your plan, regardless of changes in the energy market. Plans come in different term lengths – 12 months and 36 months are the most common. Note that while rates stay the same, government taxes and fees may change.
  • Variable rate: The rate you pay can fluctuates month-to-month and is dependent upon the wholesale price of your electricity.
  • No deposit:Your credit score determines whether you need to pay a deposit or not. You could also opt for a prepaid plan, where you pay upfront for every month.

Green energy plans in Houston

Texas is a leading renewable energy producer in the U.S. The mayor of Houston has committed to purchasing 100 percent renewable energy for the city’s municipal operations.

This means that most energy companies offer green energy plans. Green electricity plans in Houston are normally sourced by wind or solar power to help you lower your carbon footprint. Some providers only offer green plans. Among those are Gexa Energy, Iberdrola Texas, and Chariot Energy.
