In 2002, the Texas energy market was deregulated. After deregulating the energy market, consumers received the power to choose their electricity company from a wide variety of providers. Before then, consumers were limited to getting their electricity from the local utility company. This has led to increased competition between energy providers and lower electric rates for Texans.
