Your Power to Choose Texas Energy
Discover your freedom to choose a Texas electric provider with ChooseTexasPower.org.

What is PowertoChoose?

For more than 20 years, most Texans have had the power to choose their own electricity plans and rates. The Lone Star State’s deregulated energy market allows electricity providers to compete for business, giving consumers and businesses the opportunity to save on their energy plans.

To help consumers navigate this deregulated market, the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) established PowertoChoose.org, a public site that lets consumers browse and compare electricity rates in their area. However, users have criticized the site for being cumbersome and requiring them to visit individual provider sites to complete the signup process.

Choose Texas Power is your power-to-choose alternative to PUCT’s state-run site. As a one-stop shop, our marketplace allows you to explore plans and providers, read reviews, and sign up all in one place. Enter your ZIP code to compare electricity plans in Texas in one streamlined process.

Understanding power to choose in Texas

The Texas energy market was deregulated in 2002. Energy customers gained the power to choose electric rates and plans from various providers. Consumers aren’t limited to getting their electricity from the local utility company. Instead, they can choose their energy provider. Deregulation in Texas has increased competition between energy providers and helped many Texans capture reduced electricity rates.

About 85% of Texas has access to deregulated energy. Only a few areas, such as Austin and San Antonio, aren’t deregulated. The largest cities in Texas that offer you the power to choose electricity plans include:

Types of plans offered in Texas

As a Texas resident, you can choose from many electricity plans. However, they fall into three main categories:

  • Fixed-rate plans: These electricity plans secure a fixed price for your energy for a period of time so you can more accurately plan and budget. Popular fixed-rate plans usually last one to three years. One drawback is that you’ll have to pay an early termination fee if you want to end your contract before its expiration date.
  • Variable-rate plans: If you choose a variable-rate option, your energy price will fluctuate each month based on changes in the energy market. You can get very low prices during periods of low demand. On the other hand, your bill can rise sharply when demand spikes, such as during the hot summer months.
  • No-deposit plans: If your credit score doesn’t meet a provider’s required threshold, you’ll likely have to pay a deposit before you can begin your service. To avoid this cost, you can opt for a no-deposit or prepaid energy plan.
