Texas electric providers and utilities

AEP Texas North serves the deregulated electricity market in northern Texas. With deregulation, electricity consumers have different energy providers they can choose from. Having the power to choose enables you to pick a retail electric provider (REP) that offers the most suitable plans, rates, and features to meet your needs. Leading providers in the area include Direct Energy, Frontier Utilities, and TXU Energy. AEP Texas North is the only utility serving deregulated residents of the area.

The utility has a different role from the energy suppliers. Energy suppliers buy electricity from generating companies and sell it to consumers, while the utility delivers the power. The provider will deal with any account details such as your billing, usage, and cost trends. The utility will connect and disconnect the service when the retail electric provider requests.

If you do not sign up for an electricity plan with a REP, the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) will assign one based on your area’s “Provider of Last Resort.” The Provider of Last Resort for customers in the AEP Texas North service area is TXU Energy.

In addition to the energy supply rate charged by your REP, you will also pay a delivery fee charged by AEP Texas North. Use Choose Texas Power at no charge to make provider and plan comparisons. With Choose Texas Power, you can enter your ZIP code to easily research rates and plans in your area.
