Texas electric providers and utilities

AEP Texas North serves the deregulated electricity market in Texas. Electricity consumers have different options to choose from in terms of energy providers. The power to choose enables you to pick a retail electric provider (REP) that offers the most suitable plan for your needs at competitive rates. Leading providers in the area include Direct Energy, Frontier Utilities, and TXU Energy. However, AEP Texas North is the only utility serving deregulated residents of the area.

The utility has a different role from the energy suppliers. Energy suppliers buy electricity from generating companies and sell to consumers, while the utility delivers the power. This arrangement means that you can only buy power from a provider and not a utility in Texas. The utility will also connect and disconnect service as requested by the retail electric provider.

If you do not sign up for an electricity plan with an REP, the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) will assign one for you based on your area’s “Provider of Last Resort.” The Provider of Last Resort for customers in the AEP Texas North service area is TXU Energy.

In addition to the energy supply rate charged by your REP, you will also pay a delivery fee charged by AEP Texas North. Use Choose Texas Power at no charge to make provider and plan comparisons easily by entering your ZIP code to research rates and plans in your area.
