Texas is a deregulated energy market, so you can pick your electricity provider and plan. Deregulation means that several energy providers are competing for business, and you have the power to choose among them. Selecting the best provider for your needs involves comparing different plans and rates. Oncor Electric plays a different role from an energy provider. A provider buys energy from the companies that generate electricity, sells it to the consumer, and manages your account. On the other hand, the utility takes energy from the provider and distributes it to homes and businesses through the power lines it maintains. In essence, you will buy power from a retail electric provider in Texas.
Your utility company is responsible for restoring service during a power outage, not your electricity provider. If you are an Oncor customer, you can report a power outage using the online portal.
