Texas electric providers and utilities

Texas legislators deregulated the state’s energy market back in 2002. As a result, residents and business owners got the right to choose a retail electric provider (REP). REPs are responsible for purchasing and occasionally generating energy, and managing their customers’ electricity bills. They cooperate closely with your local utility company, which takes care of distributing the power to your home or business, and oversees power grid maintenance. Each utility, including TNMP, has a service area to cover.

If you don’t sign up for an electricity plan with a REP, the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) will assign one for you based on your area’s “Provider of Last Resort.” The Provider of Last Resort for customers in the TNMP service area is TXU Energy (residential and small non-residential). Read our TXU Energy review for more information on the specific provider. Your monthly bill will come from your provider, and it will include the transmission and delivery charge from your utility. It will also include government taxes and fees.
