Texas electric providers and utilities

Due to the restructuring of Texas’ energy market in 2002, Texas residents have the power to choose a retail electric provider (REP). Your chosen REP works hand in hand with your area’s utility company. REPs are responsible for purchasing and occasionally generating energy, while transmission and distribution utilities such as Texas-New Mexico Power deliver the energy to your house.

If you do not sign up for an electricity plan with an REP, the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) will assign one for you based on your area’s “Provider of Last Resort.” The Provider of Last Resort for customers in the TNMP service area is TXU Energy (residential and small non-residential).

Your monthly bill will come from your provider, and it will include the transmission and delivery charge from your utility. It also will include government taxes and fees.

When you enter your ZIP code, we will show you REP rates and plans in your area so you can choose the rate and plan that work for you. To learn more, call one of our energy experts at the number on your screen or check out our guide to choosing a provider.
