CenterPoint Energy FAQs
How are utility companies and energy providers different in Texas?
Energy providers are retail companies that sell electricity to consumers. Utility companies deliver electricity and ensure the local electrical infrastructure works properly, including poles, wires, and meters. They also restore power after an outage. Another main difference is that deregulated customers can select their energy provider but not their utility company. Your utility company is assigned by location.
Who do I contact about a downed power line or an electric outage?
Contact your utility company to fix any local electrical equipment or to report a power outage. Check your monthly electricity bill if you are unsure which utility company services your area.
Can I lower my utility charges?
No, you cannot lower your utility charges because the PUCT sets them. These fees are updated twice yearly to account for upgrades to the power grid and ensure the safe transportation of electricity from power plants to homes and businesses.
Do I have to pick an energy provider?
In Texas, you have to select an energy provider. If you do not select an energy provider, you will be enrolled in a default plan selected by the PUCT depending on your service area. In CenterPoint Energy’s service area, the default provider is Reliant Energy. Avoid being enrolled in a default plan by browsing your options on our marketplace and selecting a plan tailored to your needs.
