What is an ESID?

ESID stands for Electric Service Identifier, which is a unique number tied to your address. Every address in Texas has an ESID number to help energy providers and utility companies locate your home or business in their systems. It’s also called ESI ID, ESI, or ESIID.

How is an ESID used?

Your ESID is used to locate your address when you sign up for an energy plan. Whether you’re signing up for the first time or switching providers, you’ll need this number to activate your service. If you don’t have this number, you can find it on a recent electricity bill in your account information or by contacting your utility company. Having it in advance can help speed up the process.

Our team can assist you even if you don’t know your ESID number. Call the number on your screen for help.

How do I find my ESID number?

Your ESID number is located on your monthly energy bill. Since this number is associated with your address, it won’t change as long as you live at the same location, even if you change energy providers. In Texas, your ESID is not located on your meter.

Here’s an example of where to find the ESID on a Gexa Energy electricity bill: on page two, look next to “meter reading information” in section C.

Most utility companies also provide an ESID lookup on their websites. If you’re still having trouble, we can help find your ESID number — simply call the number on your screen and one of our agents will assist you.

What your ESID is not

  • Not your account number: That number is specific to your provider and changes whenever you switch plans or companies.
  • Not your meter number: That identifies the physical device and is printed on the meter; it changes if your meter is replaced.
  • Your ESID stays with the property: It remains the same even if you change your meter or provider. You’ll receive a new ESID when you move to a different property.

Frequently asked ESID questions

What do I need my ESID number for?

Your energy provider needs your ESID to activate your account and correctly locate your service address.

Who assigns ESID numbers?

Utility companies assign ESID numbers to addresses within their service territories. This helps them identify locations, monitor meters, and deliver electricity correctly.

Do businesses have an ESID number?

Yes. Businesses in Texas also have ESIDs. Since businesses can choose their energy provider, it’s helpful to know your company’s ESID when enrolling in a commercial energy plan.

How do I know my ESID number if I moved to a new home?

If you’ve moved and don’t know your ESID, call one of our energy agents for help. Our team can locate your ESID from your new address and connect you with an energy plan for your home.
