Lonestar Spotlight: TREDAGAIN
Caitlin Cosper / June 26th, 2017
With TREDAGAIN®, you can walk on a surface where others have gone – or driven – before. Founded in Austin in 2015, TREDAGAIN produces the world’s first upcycled-tire shoe. It promises that for every five pairs sold, one rubber passenger tire will be kept out of the landfill and put to good use instead. In this case, as footwear in the form of flip-flops.
TREDAGAIN’s goal is to prevent at least 3,000 scrap tires from hitting the junkyard each year, according to a statement made by the company’s president. Determined to “leave a better footprint” on the planet,” transforming something that is no longer functional into an entirely new product is the heart and soul of the company.
Upcycling vs. recycling: What’s the difference?
Recycling is a great way to practice eco-friendliness. Everyone knows that. But did you also know there are limitations to how certain materials can be used again? When items such as rubber tires are recycled, they typically can only be turned into lower- or equal-quality products. Since they can’t be recycled twice, upcycling can be an even more eco-conscious option. When tires are upcycled, the scrap rubber can be broken down and revitalized into an even better material.
What sets TREDAGAIN apart from other eco-friendly shoes?
Noted as a “game changer” by Outdoor Magazine and featured in Austin Monthly and Austin Fit Magazine, each pair of TREDAGAINs contains outsoles made from 50% APX® – a 100% virgin rubber substitute created from old tires. The material is both lightweight and durable, offering even more slip resistance than the rubber it was sourced from. Because of this, TREADAGAINs could outlast competing eco-friendly shoes. Plus, the majority of other “green” footwear brands contain roughly 5% of recycled or upcycled materials – much less than TREADAGAINs.
Want to check them out for yourself? Here’s how to buy
If you need new kicks to accompany you on adventures this summer, a pair of TREDAGAINs could be an option to consider. Because of their eco-friendliness, these flip-flops are something you can feel good about wearing. The shoes are highly slip-resistant thanks to APX, making them great for a day at the water park or afternoon on the boat. Plus, they’re both stylish and sustainable, TREADAGAIN boasts.
According to the company’s website, men’s and women’s sandals run for $49.99-$99.99 in a variety of styles and colors. If you catch them on sale, you could snag a pair for $19.99.

The world continues to change, and so does the way we get energy. In Texas, oil, natural gas and coal have been the main sources of energy because, historically, they’ve been cheap and plentiful. For Texas, the best green energy source is wind.
